Scientists at L.L. National Laboratory were building a new supercomputer called Sequoia that was intended to be the most powerful machine in the world when it was completed by the end of 2012. At least two other machines of comparable power were in the works. However, one vital component was missing. Just as a super-fast race car needs many mechanics and other technicians to coax all the power from its engine, a super computer needs many software engineers to write programs that split up the work and therefore utilize the power of its hundreds of thousands of microprocessors. This proved to be a daunting task that required specialised training. So, when the supercomputers were completed, there was a shortage of people who know how to make use of all this computing power.
